Catalase

Overview
It highlights the presence of the catalase enzyme in a bacterium. This enzyme can break down the hydrogen peroxide (oxygenated water) in water and oxygen, with the subsequent appearance of bubbles.

Carrying out the practical
Use a plate with the grown microorganisms and in an area where there is quite a lot of growth add a few drops of hydrogen peroxide and watch to see if bubbles appear in a few seconds or not.

Positive catalase: bubbles appear that represent the release of oxygen, which indicates that the bacterium has the catalase enzyme.

Negative catalase: bubbles do not appear, which means that the bacterium does not have this enzyme.
